Trauma Awareness Month – May, 2020

May is Trauma Awareness Month and this year’s theme is “Distracted To Death: Pat Attention Or Pay The Price.”

We at ivalueSafety.com want to share a post by ATS regarding Trauma Awareness Month per the following:

Injury prevention has been a core value of the American Trauma Society since the Society was founded in 1967. As an integral part of the ATS mission, ATS continues to be a national leader in preventing injuries and trauma.  These efforts continue to drive the organization’s activities, resource development and advocacy.

The American Trauma Society was instrumental in having May of each year designated as National Trauma Awareness Month by President Ronald Reagan and Congress in 1988. Since then, ATS has worked with other trauma organizations, some of which have included CDC, NHTSA, EMSC, USSG, SafeKids, National Safety Council, MADD, and the Society of Trauma Nurses (STN) to develop injury prevention and trauma awareness materials for use by our members in their communities. Each year, a new focus is designated which relates to injury prevention and raising trauma awareness.

Over the years the following have been some of the campaign themes of National Trauma Awareness Month:

  • Drunk Driving
  • Teen Driving
  • School violence
  • Sports Injuries (General)
  • Sports Injuries/Concussions
  • Safety at Home
  • Falls and the Elderly
  • Water Safety
  • Head Injuries/Helmet use
  • Red Light Running
